Intelligent Implant Systems Receives 510(k) Clearance for Two-Level Revolution™

Existing All-Sterile System Expands to Accommodate Two-Level Fusions

Intelligent Implant Systems announced today that the two-level components for the Revolution™ Spinal System were cleared by the FDA via 510(k) for sale in the United States. These components expand the capabilities of the system and allow Revolution™ to be utilized for two-level posterior thoraco-lumbar fusions. With one-level sales beginning in October of 2015, the company has seen significant sales growth in 1Q 2016, and the system is currently being used at both hospitals and ASC’s in several regions across the United States. Revolution™ is intended to simplify single and two-level thoraco-lumbar fusions by providing a sophisticated novel implant system which is implanted with a single tray of all-sterile instruments. Implants are also provided sterile, eliminating the need for the hospital or ASC to sterilize anything for the procedure. The procedure is fast: place the pedicle screws, attach the connectors, and lock with the single-use torque wrench. There are no rods to contour, and with the locking mechanism built in, there are no set screws to place and potentially cross-thread.

Marc Richelsoph, CEO of Intelligent Implant Systems said: “Intelligent Implant Systems is committed to expanding our pioneering efforts in the all-sterile lumbar implant market. With the addition of the two-level components, the potential usage of the implant system now applies to the majority of patients, as most fusions are one and two-level. The same benefits of the system apply to the hospital and ASC: a simplified procedure, one tray of single-use instruments to make the procedure faster, and a potentially reduced risk of infection for the patients. OR turn time can be accelerated, as there is no need to clean and sterilize instruments, and there is no need for inventory management by the hospital or ASC.”

The new components allow expansion to two-level fusions while maintaining the simplicity and existing capabilities of the Revolution™ system. The same single-use instrument tray is used for a one or two-level procedure. The two-level system utilizes the existing Revolution™ Connectors, and requires only a minimum of additional components. The unique and extremely controllable compression and distraction provided by the system is maintained, setting the system apart from any other system on the market. All implants are UDI compliant, with individual bar coding and labels to provide inventory and tracking information.

Press Release

Revolution™ Spinal System Used in First Surgeries

IIS Revolution™ spinal fusion system features an all-sterile implant and sterile disposable instrument set and represents a fundamental change to the way single and two level posterior lumber spinal fusions are performed.

Intelligent Implant Systems, LLC is pleased to announce today that Revolution™ Spinal System has been officially launched and multiple surgeries have been completed with this new posterior thoracolumbar spinal fusion system. The surgeries were performed by Dr. William Hunter of the Neuroscience & Spine Center of the Carolinas. The Revolution™ Spinal System pioneers a new approach to lumbar spinal fusion by providing an advanced all-sterile implant and instrument set, which has numerous advantages over conventional thoracolumbar spinal fusion systems.
The Revolution™ Spinal System allows approaches to treating spinal fusion cases in a manner never experienced before in the lumbar spine, while making the procedure simpler, faster, and more effective. Implants and instruments are provided sterile packed for single use only, eliminating numerous issues with processing multiple non-sterile trays at hospitals. Last week, a surgery was performed to correct a condition in the lower back from L5 to S1, and an additional surgery was performed to correct an L4-L5 condition. In both cases, the sterile-packed Revolution™ disposable instrument kit, manufactured by ECA Medical Instruments, was used in the procedure and held the full complement of disposable fixation instruments.

“We are very pleased to launch this new advanced system. This is the beginning of a change in the way single and two level spinal procedures are done and will be done in the future,” said Marc Richelsoph, President and CEO of Intelligent Implant Systems, LLC, based in Charlotte, NC. “There are numerous benefits provided by using a single sterile disposable set of instruments along with specially designed sterile implants.”
Conventional systems are provided to the hospital in multiple non-sterile trays that require the hospital to sterilize the implants and instruments prior to use. Instruments, sterilized before each case, are used for many cases and, as a result, can be worn or out of calibration. Revolution™ eliminates this risk by providing pristine sterile instruments for every case.

Spine procedures carry a risk of infection, and current literature suggests that a significant amount of wound contamination occurs during surgery. Trays of implants and instruments, when exposed to the OR environment, become a source of contamination. The Revolution™ system eliminates this source with pre-sterilized implants that are not opened from their sterile packaging until the surgeon is ready to implant. Additionally, a reduced number of instruments are required to implant the system, and these instruments are provided in a single pre-sterilized instrument tray which remains sterile until the packaging is opened. With the need for lot traceability becoming more important for spinal implants, eliminating non-sterile implants and placing the implants in pre-sterilized, bar coded packages provides superior tracking for the hospital and company. A single disposable sterile instrument tray also reduces required OR space and eliminates the need for post-operative handling, cleaning, and sterilization of instruments.

Intelligent Implant Systems Announces Funding

Intelligent Implant Systems Closes Funding with North Carolina's Yadkin Bank

Intelligent Implant Systems, LLC announced today the closing of a significant round of financing that will assist in funding the ongoing launch and sales of the Revolution™ Spinal System. The funds were raised in conjunction with Yadkin Small Business Lending, a division of North Carolina’s Yadkin Bank. Scott Birkner, Vice President and Business Development Officer of Yadkin Small Business Lending, commented “We are always excited to partner with great companies like Intelligent Implant Systems. Entrepreneurs like Marc are admirable because they create job opportunities, which in turn strengthens our community. We are thrilled to support local growth in the Charlotte area.”
Marc Richelsoph, President and CEO responded by saying, “We are very pleased to be working with Yadkin Small Business Lending and impressed by the team and support they have provided. This funding places us in a great position to grow sales and expand our Revolution™ Spinal System. Yadkin Small Business Lending responded to our needs and took the time to understand our business and see the opportunity.”

The Revolution™ Spinal System is based upon using a single disposable instrument tray and implants that combine the best of polyaxial screw systems and plating systems into a new implant. This implant has the ability to connect multiple bone screws while adjusting for angulation and distance between the bone screws. This assists the surgeon in connecting implants at different angles without bending or contouring rods or other components. Benefits of the system include accurate and easier connecting of two or more implants and significantly reducing surgical instrumentation and surgical time. Unlike most current systems, the locking mechanism is built in, eliminating extra components and steps, such as placing set screws, which can be tedious and introduce the risk of cross threading.
The Revolution™ Spinal System can be implanted using a total of seven instruments, including a new instrument for easy controllable compression and distraction. Additionally, the bone screws are cannulated for use in mini-open and minimally invasive surgical procedures. In addition to the sterile single instrument tray, implants for the Revolution™ system are also provided sterile, packaged in transparent tubes with each implant having a barcode for traceability. This all-sterile approach has numerous benefits for surgeons, hospitals, and patients, including a streamlined OR process with fewer trays and instruments, no need to wrap and sterilize instrument trays, simplified inventory tracking, and a reduced risk of infection.
